Color Harmony in Interior Design – Through the Eyes of a Painter
First of all, let me make it clear that I am not an interior designer – so you might wonder on what basis I’m offering advice on this topic.
Well, as a painter, I work with colors, and I have experience in what colors harmonize well with each other and how to create an aesthetically pleasing overall effect. Interior design encompasses many areas – but the world I move confidently in is that of colors, styles, and wall decorations, especially paintings. I’d like to share some useful tips and inspiration in these areas – especially for those looking to create color harmony in interior design.
1. The Magic of Complementary Colors
If you’re unsure how to tastefully match colors, the first and most important rule to keep in mind is knowing your complementary colors. These colors complement each other, which is why they harmonize perfectly when used side-by-side – whether you’re working with primary colors or shades mixed from them.
Here are the best-known complementary pairs of primary colors that create dynamic contrast:

Each color pair offers endless possibilities for creating different shades. The key is: any shades within a pair will always harmonize – and this already gives you a stable foundation for applying color harmony in interior design.

2. Balancing Warm and Cool Colors
My second tip is about combining warm and cool colors:
- Cool colors: bluish, purplish, greenish shades – they suggest distance, calmness, serenity, and retreat.
- Warm colors: yellowish, orange, reddish tones – they invite, approach, and contain passion and movement.

Good news: except for orange, all colors have both cool and warm versions depending on the mix. More blue makes a tone cooler, more yellow makes it warmer – so you can find a perfect complementary color for nearly any hue.
This means that if you mix colors as described above, you’re very likely to achieve an aesthetically pleasing and balanced color harmony in your home.
3. Seasonal Color Palettes
Another creative approach is to choose colors based on the seasons: spring – summer – autumn – winter.
This method is especially useful if you know your own “season type” – then you naturally gravitate toward colors that resonate with you.

Seasonal palettes work not only for clothing or makeup, but perfectly for interiors as well. Colors within the same season always harmonize – so color harmony in interior design can be achieved simply and effectively with this method too.

4. The 60-30-10 Rule:
Proportions of Colors Harmonious effect depends not only on color choices but also on their proportions.
If you want a unique yet balanced color scheme, try the 60-30-10 rule:
- 60% dominant color – the least saturated, like light blue
- 30% secondary color – for example, beige
- 10% accent color – the most vibrant, such as orange in a decorative pillow or painting

This rule can be applied in any room and ensures that color harmony in interior design isn’t too much or too little.
Colors aren’t just for aesthetics – they have proven effects on both physical and mental well-being. If you’re curious to learn more, read my blog post on how the color blue affects us: https://helgamarosiart.com/the-power-of-blue/
The Role of Paintings in Home Decor
Paintings enrich our homes on multiple levels.
Some buy them as investments – for them, aesthetics or emotional impact may be less important. But many others choose a painting because of emotional resonance: it speaks to them, reflects them, or simply uplifts their mood.
What kind of painting fits the space?
If you’re already familiar with your room’s color scheme, you’re in luck – with the color combination method mentioned earlier, you can easily choose a fitting painting. But don’t forget: a painting will truly suit a space if it includes at least one color that can also be found in the room.

Style is also essential:
- A modern space calls for a modern or abstract painting.
- A classic interior suits a more traditional piece.
- In eclectic spaces, styles can be mixed freely – works that combine different style elements work especially well here.
If your space features metal, glass, and geometric forms, a minimalist, structured, geometric-style artwork could be the right choice.
If it’s more nature-inspired but still modern, go for figurative or nature-based art with a contemporary twist, or soft, abstract works.
I should also mention that a classic space can confidently include a painting that mixes both modern and traditional elements. Here is a perfect examle of it:

The Most Important Factor is Still Emotion
Color harmony and style are just part of the decision. The most important thing is that the artwork moves you. Could you live with a piece that says nothing to you, doesn’t reflect your personality, or doesn”t give you the aesthetic experience you need? Probably not.
So my suggestion is:
- First, choose paintings that match the space in terms of color.
- Then go over them again – and listen to your feelings.
The artwork that truly speaks to you will be the right choice.
